As some of you may know, Pete Jackson made Bella’s and Elektra’s carbon spars. I am talking to Pete about making me a mast and gaff for Peggy. The main problem is sourcing the donor spars. If there are others interested in moving over to carbon I think it might be easier for Pete if he had a reasonable idea of how many might be interested as it could affect his ability to get stuff at a better price. I have put a poll up on the WhatApp group to get some rough numbers, without commitment.
If anyone on the forum is interested but can't take part in the poll, do let me know.

Re: Carbon Mast
We're not in the WhatsApp groups, but I'd be very interested to know about the costs of carbon.

Re: Carbon Mast
Justin, have you sourced a carbon mast?
I’ve just bought a Cape Cutter and am looking at options for a new mast. The weight of a carbon mast and gaff sound very attractive!

Re: Carbon Mast
Hi Julian - I have gone ahead with a mast and gaff, to be completed by Pete Jackson.
The tubes were sourced from a company called Carbon Fibre Profiles (https://carbonfibreprofiles.com/) at a cost of £900.
For Pete's work to fashion the bottom section that pivots in the tabernacle, the gaff jaws and the other bits and pieces to turn it into a mast and gaff the cost will be a further £1600. Pete is making another mast for Fraoch at the same time, and I think is making a third one along side our two on spec, as he expects there will be more interest as our wooden masts begin to near their end of life. Do let me know if you'd like to be put in touch with him.

Re: Carbon Mast
Thanks Justin.
Apart from perhaps looks, are there any disadvantages to having a carbon mast and gaff? Do you have any idea of life expectancy?
Is there VAT to add to the prices?
Many thanks

Re: Carbon Mast
re disadvantages - I have yet to find out!
But I am looking forward to shooting the Potter Heigham bridges, effortlessly raising the mast with one hand, while holding a cup of coffee in the other, and steering with my knee ...
Bella and Elektra both have masts made by Pete Jackson - I think they look fine in the natural carbon finish - but it's not to everyone's taste and Whistling Rufus has a carbon mast that has been covered in wood veneer.
prices include VAT

Would you like to be added to the WhatsApp group? It’s no substitute for the huge library of knowledge on this Forum, but it’s a good way to get quick responses on Cape Cutter matters
