Preventer

In one of Dennis's video's he's gull winging on the auto tiller whilst filming. If I'm honest, I would have rigged a 'preventer' in that situation to prevent an unwanted gybe. Does anyone else rig these, and, if so, how?

Well spotted.

A preventer would be useful under such circumstances.

I have had one "hairy" moment whilst running using the autopilot. Wind was dead astern, mainsail right out, boom touching shroud. Went onto foredeck to attach pole to genoa when the wind shifted causing the gybe. I managed to hold onto the shroud in the resultant 30° heel and haul myself back up around the mast and into the safety of the cockpit.

Yes, a preventer would have been the sensible thing to do!

It would be easy to quickly lash to boom to the shroud using a short length of rope and a quick release knot.

I wondered what would happen in a crash gybe, and now I know.

I think I'd be more likely to run a line from the end of the boom, around the shroud and tie off on the post. I'll have a better idea when I'm on Zephyr for real.

Are they the same as profilactics?

As I had never heard of the word 'profilactics', I googled it, and got the following:

29 Aug 2007 ... e's condoms are an easy-on male profilactic meant to eliminate struggles in the dark of tear-off condoms and provides a smooth transition ...

Can you explain to me what this has to do with gybing??
The 'preventing' bit could make sense, though.

As you know the Brits are slaves to puns, hence another
meaning for the word preventer.
