Is anyone able to share with me the length of their jib pole in preparation for what I am sure will be an outstanding Summer! Many thanks, Mark (Sabella)

The only CC I know has this is Mary Ann and it’s about 6’ long. I’m planning to make one myself - using one of these and trimming if required. I’m not sure it will work with genoa vs Yankee, which would require different lengths. I’m assuming that I will only pile out in light airs and therefore be using the genoa.

It’s quite an expensive pole though...
Do you have any alternative sources?

I have been thinking of trying to make one out of a telescopic boat hook. Search on Force4 for examples, around £16 for a 2m one. Could make a clew fitting with a loop of bungee, but cannot think of a cheap and simple way to attach to the mast (or toe rail?).

As Charles says, would only really be used in light winds to hold the foresail out. And if it does not work, not too expensive, and a negative result is also useful to other owners!!

I thought of a boat hook too. The spike might well just hook through the eye of the clew. Most are too heavy though, I thought and might stop the sail filling properly ?

Hello gentlemen

I can confirm that the pole I made for Mary Ann is 1.75 metres long. There is no particular reason for this dimension, but it seems to work. I copied the idea from the pole I had on my previous boat, a Winkle Brig.

I made the pole from ash and fitted SeaSure stainless steel pole ends.

I use it mainly on the staysail when running "goose winged" dead downwind. It is also used as a strut as part of my mast raising system utilising the trailer winch.

I like to try to avoid buying 'proper' boat kit (apart from the obvious ropes, blocks, cleats etc) as the mark up is always eye-watering - hence the attraction of Dennis' solution, which makes a whole load of sense. I have, incidentally, just fitted Parrel Beads to my mainsail - price per bead from a chandlery - about £2 on average. My solution - 100 softwood beads from Hobbycraft for £9.99 - 10 coats of varnish later and we're all set! Thanks again for the measurements.

Home made stuff is always fun! I haven’t varnished my parell beads - I soak mine in oil over winter.
