Hi everybody,

The question has already been asked before by Pugwash.

Does anyone have the dimensions of their Yankee to hand. I am going to investigate getting one made by a local sailmaker here in Holland.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Hello Dave

The yankees used are not all the same size. Those produced by Jeckells or Hyde for Honnor Marine are similar, but a number of owners have had slimmer "blade" yankees made. One of the Kielder boats "Moneypenny" has such a yankee.

I will be taking my boat off the water on 1st November, when I get my yankee (Hyde Sails) home I will measure it for you.

Yankee dimensions, (Hyde Sails):

Luff: 5.44 metres
Leech: 4.00 metres
Foot: 3.20 metres

All dimensions cringle centre to cringle centre.

It so happens that Jeckells are in the process of making me a new Yankee and Staysail. and on looking at their spec. I see the following:
Luff: 19.66' (or 5.992m)
Leech: 14.52' (or 4.425m)
Foot: 10.83' (or 3.300m)

I believe their standard dimension for a Yankee luff is shorter than this, and I questioned this original specification as I am looking for the max. 'slot' effect (by using the greatest possible leading edge) at the same time as hopefully reducing the tendency of the very long chord on the standard Genoa to drag and trap air when on the wind instead of easing and speeding the flow. The above luff length is the same as the Jeckells luff length for the Genoa.

I don't know; maybe my thinking's wrong, but I was struck on first acquaintance back in July with our (very used) genoa with how little it did for the boat when close on the wind - and with having to take it off sooner than I thought was warranted in increasing winds. Absolutely great off the wind, especially in moderate conditions, so it's staying in the wardrobe. But I'm looking forward to trying the Yankee.

I don't have the 'original' dimension for the Yankee luff from Jeckells but can well imagine it is the same as the Hyde figure quoted by Denis. ie about 20" shorter, and I don't know an obvious reason for this.
