The Aegean fleet welcomes Henk and Dipper

Postby Chris Wicks » Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:52 am

I think it is a timely moment for me to welcome our friend and neighbour Henk van Blokland to the forum and Cape Cutter ownership. Henk has sailed a small catamaran from Platania (in South Pelion, Greece) for the past few seasons. We often talk sailing. He told me he was particularly impressed one day in August when Kathryn and I went out for a sail with winds at around 20 knots and with a steep choppy sea. Double reefed and with stays'l we had a great time. To cut a long story short we went sailing with Henk in October and he made the decision to find a suitable boat to bring out to Greece. With help in the UK from Charles he has become the owner of Dipper. It is now in the back of a covered articulated lorry somewhere in Germany on its way here. It has been registered with a Dutch flag. It should be here within the week and we will help Henk sort it all out and welcome the latest addition to the Aegean fleet. We now have Maya2, Dipper and Kaliope. I am very much looking forward a cruise in company in the Gulf of Volos (Pagastitic Gulf) and around the north coast of Evia and the North Sporades ( Skiathos,Skopelos, Alonyssos ). It is a huge and semi sheltered sailing ground where the are many small anchorages and beaches and harbours to sneak into. Somewhere where in 15 years we have never paid a mooring fee for our permanent and or visitor moorings. It is somewhat unregulated but it works. It is in fact a sailing paradise. We are always happy to help other owners with logistics to come and join us here.

Excellent that another Cape Cutter 19 is performing as Dudley Dix intended and being transported internationally - albeit not in a shipping container. I am so envious of those blue seas and steady winds which you Aegean sailors enjoy. I second the welcome to Henk and wish your growing fleet great cruising.

All the best

Welcome to the CC clan, Henk.

Anyone fancy taking their boat to the Aegean, perhaps summer ‘22? What an adventure that would be!

Would love to. Love sailing in the UK but may get to the stage (i.e.age) where I'd like to spend a few years in the Med rather than battle the challenges of UK waters. Until recently I had a boat share in Greece for many years and am missing it.

Charles and I have had a chat about this and can thoroughly recommend our sailing area. Always ready to offer support from this end.

Best wishes to you all

Would be up for it. Did a flotilla sail in the Ionian many years ago, have fond memories of that. Plus some sailing in warmer weather for a change! I always have a tinge of envy looking at Chris's photos and videos

My basic idea is to trail the boats out in July (ie when school term ends) and stay until end of August. Road route probably down through Italy and then ferry across to Greece.

Launch at Milina. As Chris said, there are lots of free anchorages. What I had in mind was alternating between a few days sailing and a day or two of chilling out. I would expect to self cater aboard Aurora for much of the time.

Issues:

1. where to leave trailers and vehicles for several weeks
2. Might be very hot living aboard
3. From previous extended time aboard Aurora, food is not much issue, availability of water is.

I can store quite a few trailers at my place in an olive grove.
There are many liveaboards around the Med so I guess you adapt to the heat. A mozzie net over the boom and sleep under the stars.
It has been known to take the odd night in a cheap room by a harbour if you want a few extra home comforts. (we are soft sailors remember!)
Water is widely available around our cruising area.
I expect most sailors would take advantage of eating ashore at tavernas.

You can see our place on the page for our rental cottage. We are 20 mins fom Milina and 5 mins from Platania, we have a laid mooring in each place. I think the logistics of parking trailers will be easy and vehicles near your launch point. The are no car parks or fees just plenty of space.

Cheers

Chris
