2012 Round The Island Race

Disappointing to see there are no Cape Cutters entered in this year's Round The Island Race! Does anyone know why Mike Brookes has not entered this year? Could it be he is resting on his laurels with three wins in a row?

Needless to say there are four Shrimpers, Norfolk Gypsy entries etc.

I think Mike has an involvement in the Olympics so cannot make it.

BBC news channel at about 14.00 today ran an item mainly about Ben Ainsley sailing a 50 metre gaff rigged ketch in this years race. They then showed some footage from last year mainly about boats battling against high seas etc.

Final clip of the item was of a blue hulled CapeCutter sailing past with the crew waving to the camera. :)

Only 4th this year - beaten by a couple of Shrimpers. Half an hour is a big gap.

Ben Ainsley got round in less than 3 hours I believe.

But not in a Shrimper.

Great video of the event made by the winning Shrimper crew. No sign of Mike though.

It's not always the drag race it seems and easy to sail into a hole, especially with a northerly. We nearly beat leopard a few years ago in a much slower boat. She went offshore into a hole and we sailed past close in to Sandown.

How many on this forum have dine the ritr?
How long did it take?
Do you need to put GBR numbers on a CC?

(I'm wondering about setting myself a challenge....)

Charles

You can ask Mike Brooke in Mylor. He's done it the most, and won the class a few times.

I tried once, but it was too windy - 30kts +, so we stopped in Yarmouth. You just need to get the right fleet flag. You can borrow mine.

Here's a good video of someone who did it in a Shrimper
