Cape Cutter Rally 2023 - Treasure Hunt!

Postby PaulHardy » Tue May 16, 2023 12:17 pm

Such is the enthusiasm for this year's Rally that there are a good number of boats arriving early. To keep you all out of mischief (!?!) I have designed a Treasure Hunt to be run on Saturday 27 May. It is designed to take you around Plymouth Sound....and for those who want to venture out further (and tackle the supplementary questions) as far as Kingsand/Cawsand.... a popular place for anchorage and lunch. There will be a prize for the best score! For those unable to make a Saturday sail, keep your wits about you as many answers can be spotted by the keen sailor as they launch and move to Yacht haven Marina and/or as the Rally ventures up the Tamar and subsequently back and out to The Yealm

Cape Cutter Rally 2023 – Treasure Hunt

Fort Bovisand has a number of big maroon/brown arched doors under the approach road. How many can you count?

What sits at the top of the beacon on Plymouth Breakwater’s eastern end?

What is the advertised speed limit on the western end of Mount Batten Breakwater?

What shape is Buoy F and what is its orientation?

How many painted stripes are on the ‘lighthouse’ at the western end Plymouth Breakwater?

How many residential floors does the Fort Picklecombe main building have?

How many yellow visitors’ mooring buoys lie to the north of Drake’s Island?

How many staircases lead up to the top of the Breakwater Fort?

What is the compass bearing from Smeaton’s Tower to the War memorial?

From bottom to the top give the colour order of the painted stripes on Smeaton’s Tower?

How many tall radio masts can you see at Staddon Fort?

The navigation mark on Mallard Shoal has an advisory speed limit ‘by order…..’?

What are the words on the grassy bank above the coloured changing room doors to the east of the Tinside Lido?

How many piers/supports emerge from the river to support Laira Road Bridge (ie do not include the land/bank ends in your count, nor the cycle/footpath bridge to the north)

What are the colours of the doors on the changing rooms to the east of the Plymouth Tinside Lido?

What colour is the energy being stored in the white silos to the north of the River Plym?

Tie-breaker supplementary questions:

How many clock faces on Cawsand Clock Tower can be seen from the sea?

Is the Devonport Inn in Kingsand or Cawsand?

The Devonport Inn or The Halfway House offer welcome refreshment at Kingsand/Cawsand – good anchorage (go right up to to the swimmers’ area buoys) but you will need to row/swim ashore.

Good Luck - answers to me at Yealm Yacht Club please

If only my trailer wasn't knackered I could be a late entry to the rally just to have a go at the travellers trophy..

Have fun everyone it sounds great.
