Cooking under way

In the 'Have you been out today?' topic Dennis posted that he had made a brew under way. http://www.capecutter19.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1742&postcount=44

I'd love to do longer passages and have a brew as I go, or even have some food cooked for when I've arrived somewhere late. What do people do? I have one of those stoves with the gas cartridge on the right side, but wouldn't fancy using it at sea. I found an excellent looking home made gimbal for a small stove on YouTube.

Gimballed stove

I posted a photo of our alcohol Cookmate gimballed stove on Ladybird.
Made an Iroko base for it and it works a treat. It swings down and sits on the base when we don't want it on the gimbal.
Ideal for a brew on the go.

I like the Origo 1500 stove, but can't make up my mind where I'd mount it. Even my little stove creates a nasty smell when it's on the cupboard top. Maybe if I could cantilever a gimballed one off the centre plate box? That would be much lower down and less likely to burn anything.

OK, can anyone help with this question? What's the difference between the Origo 1500 and the Cookmate 1600? And why are the gimbals so bl**dy expensive?

As far as I could work out they are very much the same.
One thing to remember is that the gimbal kit for the Cookmate is a bit cheaper.
We bought the Cookmate.

I think I've got this sorted. I'm going to make a small almost kitchen base unit style box to fit alongside the s/board cupboard and sit on the base of the bench seat. It doesn't need to be too wide as the cooker isn't. It will render the remaining seat as either suitable for kids, on adult or a loving couple. The height of the flame will be about 5" below the current worktop height.

There should be storage space underneath for my cookset, and storage space behind it for cutlery and other utensils. It's all sketch designed already, and I should start construction some time soon. I won't need to cut the cushions as they'll be displaced aft by the same width, and there shouldn't be any evidence of the unit afterwards if I need to remove it.

Sounds interesting.

x-man1234's arrangement looks a bit close to the cabin top for me, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Do you, and will you still be able to use the quarter berth with your proposed arrangement?

I estimate that I'll lose 30cm from the length, which still leaves plenty. However, having once spent 5 days and 4 nights with three adults on board I probably wouldn't rush to again, so wouldn't need to use all berths again. The majority of my sailing is alone and I use the forepeak, and Nicky sleeps in the forepeak on the very rare occasions she comes with me.

I'll only lose 30cm, and I don't use the quarter berth for sleeping anyway.
